Premodern Project: "The Last Samurai"

"The Last Samurai"- Photoshop 2024, 8.5 x 11 JPG

For this project, the primary goal was to combine a historical aesthetic and choose to do a project (short animation, poster, social media ad and so forth) utilizing industry standard programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. For this poster, I chose to do a traditional style of 17th century Japanese art, Ukiyo-e woodblock print to advertise a fictitious movie, "The Last Samurai". Another goal of the project was to utilize modern design principles effectively with both graphic or typographically elements

To get started, I decided to challenge myself into creating a modern movie poster advertisement- something I was unfamiliar with up until fairly recently! I began sketching design samples to try and get a good handle on the block print qualities as well as the design principle I waned to focus on.

First Design Premodern Project

For my first initial design, I felt very proud of my sketching abilities as I hand drew the buildings, sun shape, clouds, and employed a multitude of different brush types to get the hatching effect of the historical style. I felt this poster had room for improvement, especially with the typographical elements and their composition.

Final Premodern Project JPG

I am very excited to show off the new and improved poster as I feel the typeface now goes along with the time period as it is a calligraphy typeface, and feels more in tune with the overall piece. I also went back into Photoshop to fix the alignment and spacing of some of the text boxes.
Early Modern Poster
For this project, the primary goal was to combine a historical aesthetic and choose to do a project (short animation, poster, social media ad and so forth) utilizing industry standard programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. For this poster, I chose to do a traditional style of German Jugendstil. Another goal of the project was to utilize modern design principles effectively with both graphic or typographically elements
I began sketching out thumbnails of at least twenty four ideas based on some research on German Jugendstil posters that I had seen from magazines around the 1900's. I decided on thumbnail five as my best design.
The first design came out well as I continued my hand-drawn style of the flowers, water lilies, and even the featuring main title "Blume". The only main issue with this pass was the black text on the bottom was difficult to read.
The final design came out a lot more clean with the addition of the semi-transparent rectangle to help alleviate the black text legibility issue. With this small but vital improvement, the poster was complete and ready to go!
Late Modern Poster
For this project, the primary goal was to combine a historical aesthetic and choose to do a project (short animation, poster, social media ad and so forth) utilizing industry standard programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. For this poster, I chose to do a style of Surrealism best portrayed from Salvador Dali. Another goal of the project was to utilize modern design principles effectively with both graphic or typographically elements
I had a lot of fun with this project and came up with twenty four thumbnail designs all depicting strange or bizarre ideas such as whales flying in the sky or a human candle. Ultimately, I decided on thumbnail ten.
This was the final design, a giant serpent coming out of the sand dunes with strange figures watching in the background. I hand drew the snake and its painstaking pattern, I also used a combination of masks, blur effects, and fractal noise to complete the background.
Saul Bass Inspired Poster
For this project, a self-conducted research portion was to combine with a creation based off of or inspired by the selected research subject (Saul Bass). After compiling research in the artist, the assignment was to a project (short animation, poster, social media ad and so forth) utilizing industry standard programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. For this poster, I chose to do a real modern movie "Us" by Jordan Peele in the style and likeness of Saul Bass.
I first started the assignment by researching all the kinds of works Saul Bass did and began identifying what made his posters successful and the key traits that made his works Identifiable.
After deciding what problem to do, I wanted to finish my movie poster series by creating one for the horror movie I loved most. I began designing twenty four thumbnails of different movie posters based on Saul bass posters and the actual advertising posters by the film company.
I also began identifying what the purpose of the poster was and how to best achieve that purpose while figuring out who I would be marketing this poster to.
Thus, the final design was created! I utilized a mix of Saul Bass inspired designs such as the simplistic glove with geometrical designs, split colors, and a hand-drawn title at the top of the poster. I was beyond thrilled with how the research and inspiration came to life n the paper, and the project was successfully received.
